🚧 Roadworks Completed on the M4 Between Junctions 10 and 12 – What It Means for Drivers

Great news for motorists travelling on the M4 – the major roadworks between Junctions 10 (Wokingham/Reading) and 12 (Theale) have now been completed. This stretch has been upgraded to a Smart Motorway with extra Emergency Refuge Areas (ERAs).

As a local specialist in breakdown recovery and accident recovery, we at Raf's Breakdown Recovery are here to guide you through the changes and remind you how to stay safe on these upgraded sections of the motorway.

🛣️ What’s New on the M4 J10–J12?

This section of the M4 has now been fully converted into an All Lane Running (ALR) Smart Motorway. That means the hard shoulder has been permanently removed and replaced with additional running lanes to improve capacity.

Instead of a traditional hard shoulder, there are now Emergency Refuge Areas (ERAs) spaced along the motorway, designed for use in case of a breakdown or emergency.

🆘 How to Use Emergency Refuge Areas (ERAs) Safely

If you break down on the M4 between Junctions 10 and 12, and you're unable to reach an exit, follow these National Highways guidelines for using an ERA:

  1. Move into the ERA if you can safely do so. They’re marked with orange SOS signs and are set back from the main carriageway.

  2. Put your hazard lights on immediately.

  3. Exit your vehicle from the left-hand (passenger) side and stand behind the safety barrier if possible.

  4. Use the SOS phone provided in the ERA to contact National Highways for help – they’ll know your exact location.

  5. Wait for further instructions before rejoining the motorway. Never try to pull out without being told it’s safe to do so.

If you're unable to reach an ERA call 999 – emergency services and National Highways will help you.
